Embrace the Warmth with These Awesome Summer Sport Suggestions

If there’s one thing that’s a surety, it is that summer has either arrived or is just around the corner. Once the weather gets noticeably warmer, thoughts of spending more time outdoors come almost automatically to the mind. Summer sports and activities are a great way to enjoy the warm temperature, and at the very least, are a great excuse to go out and be active. Almost everyone has an outdoor sport they prefer, and it can range from a calming one to an intense, teeth-gritting one.

Water Sports

Water sports can be done both indoors and outdoors, but there’s something relaxing (and even invigorating) about the outdoors that just makes the experience so much better. Summer is obviously a top choice for most people, so we’ve carefully compiled our top list of outdoor summer water sports just for you:

You don’t have to be into competitive swimming to enjoy this activity. It’s both great fun and an effective sport for working out your entire body. Although you can very well limit yourself to the indoors, summer serves up such great weather that it’ll be a shame if you didn’t venture outdoors to swim.

Suggestion: Coronado Beach, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach

This isn’t something you can be an expert at overnight, and in the beginning, you’ll probably have to contend with wiping out several times. However, don’t let that get you down if it’s always been something you’ve been yearning to try. If you put in enough effort and time, you might soon be able to hang ten out there on the waves.

Suggestion: Pacific Beach, La Jolla Shores, Tourmaline Surfing Park, Imperial Beach

Sailing requires quite a lot more investment, so your next best option is probably the sport of windsurfing. You’ll also get to experience the invigorating thrill of skimming across the waters but do remember that there are always risks. If your head ends up going under the water, don’t panic and just calmly head towards the surface.

Suggestion: Mission Bay, La Jolla Shores

You don’t need waves for this activity, so you can pretty much do it on any body of water. Of course, the calmer the waters, the more peaceful and slower-paced the sport will be, so this pretty much depends on your preference.

Suggestion: Silver Strand, Lower Otay Reservoir, San Diego Bay, San Elijo Lagoon

Land Sports

There really is no end to the kinds of land sports globally, and there are even new types of sports to try out every year! Of course, some sports might not be familiar to us in the U.S., so we’ll be sticking to America’s favorite outdoor summer sports right down below:

It’s America’s favorite pastime, so the real question is, have you ever played baseball before? If you’ve been itching to try out a new sport this summer, you might very well want to give baseball a go. After all, you can always start off with practicing in a batting cage before rounding up some friends to really ramp things up.

Suggestion: Dusty Rhodes Park, Paradise Hills Pony Baseball, Sunshine Berardini Park

This game progresses at a faster speed, but it’s a great team sport option to consider both indoors and outdoors. Just round up a couple of friends to try it out. If there aren’t enough people, you can always attempt to rope in strangers instead.

Suggestion: Chicano Park, Campland on the Bay, North Park Community Park

In America, it’s called soccer, but to most other parts of the world, it’s known as the sport of football. Whichever way it’s called, one thing’s for sure, soccer is a globally loved sport, and you can enjoy playing it too. Just set two people as goalkeepers on either end, divide the remainder into two teams and you’re ready to go.

Suggestion: Balboa Park, Mission Bay Park, Western Hills Park

Is your bike sitting forlornly at home? Well, if you haven’t turned its wheels for a while now, summer’s the time to let loose. Depending on your preference, there are different types of bike trails for all levels and terrain types, so just take your pick.

Suggestion: Cabrillo National Monument, Pacific Beach Boardwalk, Fiesta Island

Frisbee Golf

Who would have thought you could combine the sport of golf and frisbee? Well, whoever came up with the idea was a true genius, and more and more parks are incorporating frisbee golf courses for everyone to enjoy. Just grab a couple of frisbees and you’re good to go.

Suggestion: Morley Field Disc Golf Course, Mast Park + Disc Golf Course

Rock Climbing

This would fall under the extreme sport category. However, like every other kind of extreme sport, you can always start practicing in a safer environment before venturing to the real thing. If you’ve got a thing for heights, this could be your next thrilling hobby.

Suggestion: Valley of the Moon, Joshua Tree National Park, Tahquitz, Santee Boulders

Beach Volleyball

In summer, beach volleyball is at the top of the list for favorite beach sports, and with good reason. You don’t need to know how to swim to enjoy the game, and it’s a great way to play with lots of people and get your inner competitive spirit fired up!

Suggestion: Silver Strand, South Mission Beach, Coronado Beach,

You don’t need to own golf clubs to give this a try. After all, there are always driving ranges around to start with, and if you’re spending a couple of hours there without realizing it, this is probably something you’ll want to explore further on an actual golf course.

Suggestion: Torrey Pines Golf Course, Balboa Park Golf Course, Maderas Golf Club
