9 Awesome San Diego Summer Day Trip Suggestions

It wasn’t easy to appreciate how much time we had to spend on ourselves when we were younger, but as we grow older, we start to wonder how to get more time to ourselves. As a working adult, getting the right balance in life is necessary in order to function optimally. With the many commitments and responsibilities on our shoulders, it can sometimes be hard to find time to spend with loved ones and do the things we like.

Nevertheless, it’s important for us to remember that our well-being is tied to how much time we spend taking care of ourselves. It can understandably be difficult to do much with the limited amount of time we have, but there are still plenty of ways to go around it. We’ve got some great summer escape day trips for you right down below, so get ready to be inspired:

Go for a Camping Trip

If you’re looking for an activity that offers the opportunity for minimal planning and on-the-day packing, this is it. All you need are the necessary equipment (e.g. sleeping bag, tent, backpack, etc.) and a confirmed slot at your target camping ground. You can also easily grab more supplies and food along the way, so this is one thing you should definitely consider an outdoor summer activity.

Suggestion: Campland on the Bay

Location: 2211 Pacific Beach Dr, San Diego, CA 92109

Visit a Local Museum

Not everyone wants to spend their summer days outdoors, and one really good indoor activity is visiting the museum. Unless you’re a museum buff, there are still probably museums in your area you have yet to explore, and depending on the current displays of the season, you can easily spend an entire day here.

Suggestion: San Diego Natural History Museum

Location: 1788 El Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA 92101

Opening Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Daily)

Go Hiking

This popular activity can be done in almost any weather, and summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors and get in some physical exertion too. Depending on your experience and expertise, you’ll want to choose the right trail difficulty level in order to get the most out of your day trip.

Suggestion: Iron Mountain Trail @ Poway

Distance: 5.8 miles

Go to A Water Park

For a cooling summer adventure, you can’t go wrong with a water park. Rather than joining the crowd at the beach, you can still have lots of fun and soak in as much sun as you like without paying a bomb. Sure, it can be a little noisier than soaking in a private pool, but you’ll definitely get to enjoy the outdoors with everyone else.

Suggestion: Aquatica San Diego

Location: Aquatica San Diego, 2052 Entertainment Circle, Chula Vista, CA 91911

Enjoy an Outdoor Concert

It’s time to get off your couch and out in front of an actual outdoor stage this coming summer. Most summer concerts are free, so about all you’ll need to do is prepare your own picnic, invite all your friends, and prepare to have a blast with the night’s performing artistes.

Suggestion: Toyota Summer Concert Series @ San Diego County Fair

Location: Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, CA 92014

Visit a Farm

Since there are lots of fruits ripening in summer, it makes sense to indulge in eating them all. However, part of the fun of eating fresh produce comes from harvesting them yourself, and you’ll literally get to enjoy the fruits of your harvest. Just call your local pick-your-own farm and find out their ripening schedule to plan your day trip.

Suggestion: Carlsbad Strawberry Company

Location: 1050 Cannon Rd, Carlsbad, CA 92008

Opening Hours: Come before 5 p.m.

Visit the Zoo

There’s always something to see and discover at the zoo, and if you have younger kids in tow, you already know who’ll be the most excited. The food here will probably cost more, but it’ll be worth it. Since it’s a popular summer activity, you can easily expect a large crowd on weekends, so if you’re not into squeezing with everyone else, you should choose a weekday to stop by instead.

Suggestion: San Diego Zoo

Location: 2920 Zoo Dr, San Diego, CA 92101

Opening Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Daily)

Go to the Local Library

Even if you’re not into reading books, there’s still plenty you can do at your local library. These days, most libraries are equipped with tons of multimedia resources ranging from e-books and audio books to free videos and special programs, so do drop by when you can.

Suggestion: San Diego Central Library

Location: 330 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 9210

Opening Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Mon to Thurs), 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Fri & Sat), 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. (Sun)

Enjoy a Wine Tasting Session

Anyone up for some whites or reds? Rather than buying a couple of bottles back home, you can always make a day trip to the nearest winery to enjoy the outdoors and vintages they have on hand. Some wineries also provide free wine tasting sessions on certain days, so if you know you’ll enjoy that, you’ve already got one summer activity to look forward to.
